The tale of Denry Machin, as told by novelist Arnold Bennett in The Card (Methuen, ), is a lark, a droll comedy, a jovial adventure in business and life success - a literary "Horatio Alger" story. Bennett tells his story in short chapters, and the book as a whole is not long/5. In his comedic moments, Bennett has a fine sense of irony (see his short story 'The Lion's Share') which repeatedly surfaces in 'The Card/Denry the Audacious'.

As a characterization of the era and place, this short novel could not be surpassed, even if some of the episodes (e.g. the challenge to the Signal, which was omitted from the film /5(7).

Set in a small industrial town at the start of the 20th century, this is the humorous story of Edward “Denry” Machin. Denry is an impulsive, opportunistic and occasionally lucky entrepreneur with few scruples where money-making is concerned.

Not especially likeable yet not entirely loathsome, Denry makes for a very entertaining character to both the fictional townsfolk and readers of this.

In this volume, Denry's audaciousness has been tempered somewhat by middle age. In his current incarnation as "Edward Henry," he's having a hard time reconciling himself to the peaceful lull of domesticity, so he plans a caper with some of his old pals, hoping to revive.

His Potteries characters can be audacious, too, and wonderfully bold. Denry Machin, hero of the The Card (with which Bennett novices could do worse than start) passes through life Author: Charlotte Higgins.
